Threaded replies vs. flat — what works for support?

For client support sites we keep going back and forth on threaded versus flat replies. Threading helps tangents; flat keeps Q&A readable.

What has worked for your communities, and does the space type change your answer?

Tried this on a staging copy first and it behaved exactly as described. Confident enough to roll it to production now.
